TAMILNADU - Traders urge Tamil Nadu govt to increase VAT exemption limit

The Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sanga Peravai today urged the state government to increase the exemption for levying VAT up to Rs 50 lakh.

Briefing newspersons on the deliberations of its 27th state conference here, the Federation's state unit president T Vellaiyan and president of the Federation's Tiruchirapalli district unit N T Kandan said a resolution to this effect was adopted at the conference. It also called for a rethink on bringing in the GST Tax Act.

They said it also wanted the government to reorganise the State Traders Welfare Board, which was not functioning properly, by amending the Act and making it mandatory for all traders to become members of the Board. It also demanded that the Board's rules and regulations be simplified, so that all traders could benefit from the Board's welfare measures.

They said the conference opined that the existing property tax rate was very high and should be reduced and minimum professional tax must be levied for traders.

The conference appealed to the Centre and the state government to ban online trading immediately as it was the major reason for the rise in the prices of essential commodities.

It also appealed to the state government to prevent the multi-nationals and foreign companies from entering retail market in the country, they said.

The conference expressed its deep concern over disruption of power supply for multinationals and appealed to the government not to allow more multinationals to set up new ventures in Tamil Nadu.

It also appealed to the government to reconsider its move to hike the power tariff for business firms.

The conference demanded that the government should establish a weavers welfare board and ensure payment of incentive to aged weavers, besides ensuring uninterrupted power supply for weaving operations.

Mr Vellaiyan also pointed out that the Federation urged the Centre to evolve new schemes for the development of small and medium scale industries to enable them to compete with the global organisations, and also to ensure uninterrupted power supply for them.
